Welcome back, and happy fall semester! Thanks to our efforts and yours, as of September 22nd, we have reached over 200 new members fully signed up on eDues. That's both because of our organizers going door-to-door in departments and because of you, telling your friends and colleagues about GAU and the importance of being a dues-paying member.

This semester, we'd like to continue this trend by increasing our membership to 900. Why? Well, this year, the Florida legislature passed a bill that makes payroll deduction illegal for unions and requires 60% of the bargaining unit to be union members for all public employee unions or they would risk decertification. If we were decertified, you would be left without a minimum stipend, without representation if you have a grievance, without guaranteed health insurance subsidies, and even without a collective bargaining agreement. According to information provided to us during last bargaining season, there are 2,918 graduate assistants at FSU. Increasing our membership to 60% of that number in order to pre-empt these bills is of paramount importance. Getting to 30% this semester is the first step in building a union that can't be threatened by union-busting tactics!
